1996 & 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti - Richebourg - I

1996 & 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti - Richebourg - I had the pleasure to taste these 2 wines side by side at La Paulée in San Francisco this weekend. A lot of people think of wine events like this as filled with one-upmanship, however based on my 1 and only reference point I found the opposite to be true. A woman that I had just met that evening stood behind me and said “You need 2 empty glasses” I replied “what are we drinking” as my glasses were all already filled with amazing 🍷. She said “1996 and 1999 DRC Richebourg”. Needless to say, I quickly had 2 empty glasses. We chatted about the wines later in the evening and I thanked her once again. The 1996 was drinking beautifully with extremely floral aromatics, some beguiling aged notes and still a lot of primary fruit. The 1999 was similar but not as open as the 1996. That being said the 1999 had a lot of more tannin and even higher acidity level. Its still tight and needs a few more years to get to peak and once it does it will be the better wine.
