Luscious sweet nectar from the cool climate region of Germany. No cancel that last word, I mean’t the cool climate region of the Strathbogie Ranges of Victoria. Easy to get confused.

There is no mucking around this is a sweet Riesling, but its not sickly sweet. Its contained with a balance of freshness and acidity.

But this wine comes into its own when paired with some stinky smelly cheese or a blue vein where the sweetness plays perfectly. It takes the wine to the next level and screams for cheese board…simple…

Recommendation: A Bargain elegant light Pinot.

I love the wines that William Downie makes and if there is one winery I am bias about it is his range of wines. Not only do I adore his labels which feature iconic Australian landscapes from

 his ability to craft pinots makes them at the forefront of my shopping list.

This is my first taste of his Cathedral Pinot. I would say this is his entry pinot as most other ones are above $50.

But this is no where near an entry level wine. Most winemakers would be ecstatic to have such a wine, especially if it was the ‘cheaper one’.

It is a lot lighter than his other Pinots, but makes a beautiful impression especially if it is a night filled with more wine.

Rasberry nose and hint of five spice towards the end…simple…

Gamay is exploding on the wine scene at the moment. It has to be the latest ‘new’ grape Australian winemakers are producing with an impressive flavour. For those unaware of Gamay, in simple terms, it very similar to Pinot Noir. And those Pinot Regions of Geelong, Yarra and Mornington are starting to produce some great versions of this variety.

Rating: Different 🍷  Heirloom Vineyards Anevo Fortress Blend. So this is a blend of Grenache, Tempranillo & Touriga or I’m calling GTT. Yep...touriga. I had no idea so a quick google and in “simples” terms it’s a 🍇 from Portugal 🇵🇹. Anyway lesson over. Massive award 🥇 winner and I taste the quality. Now it is different taste but in a good way. So much going on. I’m confused. I really did enjoy it and loved the difference but it’s $80 so would I buy again? 🤔(insert 5 minutes of thinking) answer is no. But I’ve added this winery to my list. You can definitely see the quality of this winery. I would love and will try the Pinot or the Shiraz varieties. ...not so simple today...

Built for lunch. Gentle but levels of structure that shine through. If you haven’t had Nebbiolo before, try this.

Serve slightly chilled or around at 14 degree.

Recommendation: Buy. Sophisticated with Tattoos 🍷

Yes, I admit it, I bought this wine because of the label. A mix of pirate tattoos and Mexico's 'day of the dead'. Definitely stands out on the shelf.

But I didn't expect such an unique tasting wine to have a label like that (we all stereotype, don't judge)

This is rich, full bodied with a touch of elegance especially with oak present. Unusual just a like the label. There is a lot going on.

A quick search to see this vineyard is not mucking around. They use a 'secret' blend of Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Muscadelle and Colombard. In addition they use an ancient practice of co-harvesting and blending in the field. Hence the name ‘field white’. Now, I don't know if this type of blending technique is common in Australia but it’s the first time, that I’m aware of, I’ve tasted a wine that is blended this way.

The label is unique and the wine backs that up. If this wine is a pirate ship, then it is must be the QEII...simple...

Wine is more than just taste. It’s about emotion, passion and that moment in time. Whether it’s opening a special bottle for a celebration or cracking open a red with friends. All of these senses create a special wine. Wine is quite subjective and everyone has different taste and wants from a wine. Wines can be judged by a certain criteria but the reason I love wine is those extra elements that can’t be judged on paper or by scores.

This is why I have an award for wine of the year. It’s not about white or red, depth or characteristics. The Wine of the Year is awarded to a wine that delivers not only taste and flavour but creates or has an X-factor. Stirs that emotion. Creates a moment in time where you just go “wow”

Its has all the wine senses wrapped up with the sight of a beautiful colour, the smell, that frankly I wish I could smell everyday and lastly the taste of pure happiness. The wine itself is beautiful.

But this wine created additional experiences beyond the glass of wine.

The label is pure art (literally and the story behind that is even more impressive) Not to mention the background and winemaking skills of Dr Edge. The more I searched about this wine and the winemaker, the more I fell in love.

All of this created a wine that was just magical to taste and experience and my favorite wine of the year.

Charlotte Dalton was the winner of last years Young Gun of Wine Award.

Since that award, I have wanted to try one of her wines and this Adelaide Hills Shiraz didn’t disappoint.

Soft and smooth that is addictive creating that need for more. The bottle was drunk very quickly.

I understand why this one is ‘sold out’ at many stockists…simple…

Another label from a classic movie and named after one of the best lines ever with “You're gonna need a bigger boat" Roy Scheider, Jaws 1975 🍷

Well, I’ll respond with “I’m going to need a bigger cellar”

Loads of summer fruits at the start which moves to a nutty taste. A mouth sucking end that makes you want more. This does bite more than some other lighter styles but oh so good

(did you see what I did with the ‘bite’? I’m hilarious 🦈) and on that note why do sharks and dolphins have the same bloody fin. As a surfer this really annoys me. Why couldn’t one have a purple fin? Or a Ben Lexen wing keel.

...simple... Have you had Fiano? Well Fiano (fi-ah-no) is a southern Italian grape that in my opinion is easy to drink that sits above Sav Blanc but below an Chardonnay. Works well with load of food but a rich creamy pasta or some salty deep fried fish and chips. .

My eldest started High School. Not only did I feel old, I just wondered where the hell has that time gone.

To celebrate, I decided on a Dormilona Clayface Shiraz. Not only as it is a brilliant wine but the label is truely a piece of art.

I’ve reviewed Dormilona wines a few times and by now you should know I love everything they make.
