My Tasmanian odyssey continues with this absolute gem from Jonny and Matt Hughes of Mewstone under their Hughes and Hughes label. -

Firstly, the colour is a joke. Screams red fruits, cranberry freshness and twiggy goodness. All but confirmed by an enticing perfume which is barely contained by the glass. It’s as if it wants to escape, amazing really. Enjoyment factor increases with the first sip. There’s a sweet / tart balancing act going on as the red fruited and twiggy herbaceous notes mix with juicy acidity. Reminds me of a sour cherry lolly, just less sour and buckets of deliciousness. Add it to your list of Tassie gems to get your hands on!! ⁠

​There are serious (and I mean serious) smile inducing qualities about this wine from

. For me, possibly the best characteristics any wine can have. What makes this such a beautiful wine? The vineyard for starters. The Pinot Noir is grown on a north-facing slope, as south as south can be in Tasmania, with maritime influences throughout the growing season. ⁠

The wine? Pinot with body. Pinot for Shiraz lovers⁠ who say they don’t drink Pinot. Lusciously deep. Hits all the dark fruits imaginable and oozes earthy complexity. Whole bunches used to add structure and a genius acid profile complemented by beautiful oak. It’s in my top two reds of the year for sure, might push top spot if I can save some for tomorrow. ⁠

Plus, it’s a magnum, hands down best format for a wine but⁠ enough about that.

What an absolute stunner! Mewstone Top Block Pinot Noir 2016, Magnum 12 of 25. Such depth of colour, and a nose that’s simply stunning. I could barely put the glass down! On the palate, it’s plush, no messing, awesome blue fruits and savoriness in a mouthwateringly beautiful package. I really think this is one of my favorite Pinots to date. In short, stunning. 🍷

​I’m a big fan of the wines produced by

_dixon and this is no exception. Pinot Nouveau 2018 is such a glugable flavour bomb perfect for those warm summer days. That being said, it certainly isn’t a one track wine showing simple fruits, but a delicate raspberry, red fruit, festival of flavour with a carbonic edge. Love it, want more, will get more!!⁣

Dalrymple Vineyards produce some of my favourite Tasmanian Pinot Noirs so I thought it was about time I tried their Chardonnay, The Cave Block. In short… it’s bloody great. -

Pale straw, light in colour with lifted scents of citrus, stone fruits, nougat, and praline. Powerful and driven palate with zesty acidity, nectarines and peaches, almonds and toasty brioche. Opens further as it warms with great texture, balance and length. A great example of a Tasmanian Chardonnay and at very sensible price, can’t argue with that!

Maclean Bay Pinot Noir 2017… what a great way to wrap up mid-week! An east-coast Tasmanian Pinot Noir of real quality in my book. On the nose there’s great balance of cherries, raspberries, and savoury, earthy notes. Beautifully medium bodied, very balanced and wide across the palate. It’s deceptively generous in flavour, cherries, plums, and blackberries all doing the dance. The fruit is complemented nicely by rounded savoury notes, fine tannins and low/mild acidity. In short, it’s a quality drop that I’d be more than happy to make a regular!

Ever tried Tassie Malbec? This example from Grey Sands is my first, of what will be many if I can find more. In short, It’s bloody lovely.

Plums, mulberries, boysenberries and a feint touch of oak on the nose. Beautifully balanced mixed of dark fruits, mulberries and pomegranate, richly layered with mocha and tobacco. Medium tannins and great acidity package it up awesomely. It’s a ripper!

All from Grey Sands on the western edge of the Tamar Valley in Northern Tasmania where quality is prized above volume. With production around 1kg per vine, concentration is the name of the game and that can only be a recipe for awesomeness! Is it too early to have a sip?!? -

2014 Tolpuddle Vineyard - Chardonnay (91 pts)

ℹ️ This wine was tasted double blind aka zero context. This Chardonnay is from Tasmania, Australia. This vineyard was purchased by Michael Hill Smith (Master of Wine) and Martin Shaw in 2011, but the vines we planted in 1988. The vineyard is located in the Coal River Valley which is in a rain shadow, keeping the grapes dry giving it's cold climate time to mature the grapes. Hand picked, whole cluster pressed, and fermented in French Oak. The wine has minimal malolactic fermentation·

👁 very pale lemon color, almost lemon green·

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of lemon, grapefruit, preserved lemon, lees, white flowers, Flint, and hint of something herbal·

👄 On the palate the wine was dry, high bracing acidity, medium alcohol, and medium- body. Palate had a lot of sweet citrus and noticeable minerality. Medium length with a slight lemon zest bitter note·

🔔 Blind I was in Chablis from a good producer. I was astounded that this was Tasmania. Really exciting stuff. I find Chablis the hardest style of Chardonnay to replicate. I don't think they are trying to be Chablis but this is probably just the climate·

2013 Domaine A - Lady A Sauvignon Blanc Tasmania (91 pts)

- Medium lemon-green color. Pronounced intensity on the nose. Oak notes of smoke, toast, and vanilla are fairly prolific until the wine gets some air. Then you get hit by gooseberry, quince, and cantaloupe. In the back there are some green herbaceous/herbal notes like jalepeno, grass, and fennel. The wine is dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, and medium+ body (almost full). Palate has a creamy texture that is very supple. Melon, cantaloupe, baked quince, and canned pineapple on the front palate. The oak is a lot better integrated on the palate that comes as a smokey or a flinty note. The finish is long and really pleasant mix of tropical fruit and almost a creme brulee. This is the first Sauvignon Blanc that I have had from Tasmania and it does impress. Almost like Pavillon Blanc duChateau Margaux and a high end NZ Sauvignon Blanc had a kid. This is complex but you need to get past the oak. I kept tasting it over 4 days and it got progressively better with air. This will improve with bottle age and will stand up to the great white Bordeaux wines eventually, but I am scoring it right here right now. Well done!

Recommendation: Midweek bang for your buck.

I’ve seen this at most bottle shops and for $15, I thought I’ll give it a crack.

Its soft, a little fruit that gives a light taste. Actually it’s not bad especially for the price.

Perfect for a quick feed at the local Chinese or perfect for a Wednesday night...simple...

Wine is more than just taste. It’s about emotion, passion and that moment in time. Whether it’s opening a special bottle for a celebration or cracking open a red with friends. All of these senses create a special wine. Wine is quite subjective and everyone has different taste and wants from a wine. Wines can be judged by a certain criteria but the reason I love wine is those extra elements that can’t be judged on paper or by scores.

This is why I have an award for wine of the year. It’s not about white or red, depth or characteristics. The Wine of the Year is awarded to a wine that delivers not only taste and flavour but creates or has an X-factor. Stirs that emotion. Creates a moment in time where you just go “wow”

Its has all the wine senses wrapped up with the sight of a beautiful colour, the smell, that frankly I wish I could smell everyday and lastly the taste of pure happiness. The wine itself is beautiful.

But this wine created additional experiences beyond the glass of wine.

The label is pure art (literally and the story behind that is even more impressive) Not to mention the background and winemaking skills of Dr Edge. The more I searched about this wine and the winemaker, the more I fell in love.

All of this created a wine that was just magical to taste and experience and my favorite wine of the year.

Stefano Lubiana 2018 Primavera Tasmanian Pinot Noir

Recommendation: Buy; let them rest for a few years.

It is such a crowded market at the moment with pinot's, especially in that $40 price range. It is hard to differentiate between the good and the outright average. Price is never a good indication.

_lubiana_wines pinot recently being sold for $32, there is no question, it's a complete steal. Beautiful Tasmanian pinot noir. Estate grown, handmade elegance.

Bright and juicy, but I feel it is too young at the moment and needs time. I taste its potential and I'm excited for the future, so I've bought a few for the cellar. I think this will be great in a few years...simple...
