‘Si Rose’ was inspired by Roman winemaking in which white wine was made with macerated grapes, along with the increasing temperature in Alsace, causing difficulties with slow ripening varieties.

Grapes are from are from 2 consecutive vintages, from south facing hillside vineyards with limestone soils.

20% macerated for 8 months, 80% macerated for 8 days, bottled in autumn 2020. Unfined, unfiltered, no added So2.

Bright coral-orange in colour, very aromatic; with mango, rose water, melon, grapefruit, nutmeg, orange. Delicate Bergamot black tea tannins and tingly acidity accent layers of blood orange, strawberry, peach, grapefruit, mango, nectarine, lavender, candied ginger.

Thyme, orange and citrus zest infuse the crisp, mineral finish.

If you like your Pinot Gris lush, textural, and aromatic then the 2018 Cosa Nostra from the Yarra Valley would be right up your street. This barely lasted long enough to a) take a picture & b) taste. Melon, apricot, sweet baking spices, and florals on the nose. Medium bodied, nicely structured with great acidity and length with gorgeous preserved pears, mild citrus notes and green apples on the palate. In a word gulggable!

2019 Big Table Farm - Pinot Gris (90 pts)

ℹ️ This wine is 💯 Pinot Gris from Rivenwood Vineyard in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. Pinot Gris, as the name implies, actually has quite a bit of skin color (grayish-blue). They fermented this wine on the skins for ten days that looks more like a rosé than a typical skin contact white wine (aka orange wine). The wine went through complete malolactic fermentation and spent ten months in neutral French oak. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

👃 Pronounced intensity on the nose. Aromas of Earl Grey tea, rosewater, ripe persimmon, peach skin, candied orange, kumquat, elderflower, and cherry blossom.

👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, faint tannins, medium alcohol (13%), and medium+ body. A medium length finish of persimmon, Earl Grey tea, and rosewater.

🔔 The best way to describe this wine is a "swanky candle" from a fancy store in liquid form. You know those candles that smell so good you want to try and eat them? Enjoyable floral and herbal flavor profile. The fruit is so concentrated that I thought there might be some residual sugar, but it is bone dry and has some heft to it on the palate. Pinot Gris makes compelling skin contact wines, and anyone that likes this style of wine should check this out. I slightly prefer the 2019 over the 2018.

2014 Forlorn Hope - Dragone Ramato Pinot Gris (91 pts)

- Pale Ruby with an orangish tint. Medium intensity on the nose with apple skins, dried cherries, dried apricots, orange marmalade, dried flowers, and a definite chamomile tea note. The wine is dry, medium acidity, low soft tannins, medium- alcohol, and medium+ body. The palate sings of dried fruit (dried cherries, dries cranberries, and dried apricots), underripe apple, orange peel, and chamomile tea that dominates the medium+ length finish. This wine has a lot of texture due to the skin contact and really makes the wine on the palate. This wine gets an easy 2 point bump just for being thought provoking. The flavor profile of dried fruit and tea is very unique. I am a big Pinot Gris fan and this sets a new reference point for its potential in an orange wine style. Outside of the wine geek inside me, this wine is super tasty. If you drink it serve at room temperature otherwise the aromatics were quite closed.

- Medium orange almost onion skin color. Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of dried apricot, honey, peach tea, lemon zest, dried flowers, oak, tree bark, and bruised apple (apple cider). The wine is dry, medium acidity, low gritty tannin due to skin contact, medium alcohol, and medium+ body. Strong Lipton sun tea note, white peach, lemon zest, subtle oak notes, smoke, dried apricot, honey, orange marmalade, and bread dough note from lees aging. Great texture on the wine, that catches you off guard. Gritty tannins that turn into a chalky minerality. Medium+ length finish that lingers of chalk, dried apricot, and tea. Almost an umami feeling. As this wine warmed up it got better and better. This wine is a deal for anyone wanting to taste quality orange wine at a fraction of the price to some of the big boys in Friuli. Again, it's not the same league but a valiant effort.

ℹ️ This wine is from the Alto Adige region of Italy. The wine is 💯 Pinot Grigio. The winery only farms with biodynamic methods of viticulture and encourages other growers to learn about these practices. The vines are 14-31 years old and grow at 230+ meters asl. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts. This wine is a blend of three different winemaking approaches as a way to preserve freshness in the face of climate change. The first approach (60%) is an immediate direct press (the most common expression of Pinot Grigio) of the grapes. In the second approach (20%), the wine stays in contact with the grape skins for 15 hours. The third approach (20%) keeps the wine on the stems and skins for 8 months. These three component wines are blended to give a perception of freshness and liveliness to the wine·

👁 Medium gold color, slight orange hue·

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of peach skin, dried apple, bruised pear, honeycomb, yeast, hay, cinnamon, tarragon, and dried flowers·

👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, low tannin, medium alcohol (12.5%), and medium+ body. Slight phenolic bitterness on the medium length finish of dried orchard fruit and honeycomb·

🔔 This Pinot Grigio will reset many people's expectations of what is possible in Alto Adige with this grape. It is a perfect example of a winery not resting on its laurels and adapting the spirit of their wine in the face of climate change. Alto Adige Pinot Grigio is known for its crisp acidity, and when you give more warmth to Pinot Grigio, it loses that quickly. Skin contact brings out phenolics that give this wine texture and a touch bit. Fascinating concept and something I am looking forward to tasting over a few vintages·

This is just a very good Pinot Grigio...simple...

I get asked what is the difference between Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio. The short explanation of their difference is that gris is based on the French Alsace style, riper and richer, with more alcohol and sometimes a little sweetness; while Grigio is based on the Italian model, lighter and simpler with less alcohol.

So to keep it ‘simple’ one is French, while the other is Italian.

I’ve been a bit quite lately. I have been drinking but nothing really worth recommending.

I have to start by explaining this wine. Revolution is a blend of 3 varieties. Not unusual, but this wine is made from 3 varieties from 3 seperate vintages.

Now things gets interesting. The revolution started back in 2016, when one barrel of Pinot Gris was  kept from bottling. This is when this experiment began. The Pinot Gris was kept for 12 months and in 2017 this single barrel was split evenly into an additional barrel. A 2017 Semillon was added. So there was now two barrels of a Semillon and Pinot Gris blend.

Another year passed and these two barrels were divided into 3 barrels. They were then topped with the 2018 Chenin Blanc. Are you with me?

So we have a 2016 Pinot Gris blended with

Finally in 2019, two and half of these barrels were bottled to create the multi vintage blend.

Brilliant. But outright confusing at the start (note: I hadn’t read the tasting notes and as being a wine lover I always try to guess the grapes used. So with this you can imagine a bit of confusion. Especially when I just spent quite a few sentences explaining it).

I read the tasting notes after my first sip and my eyes 👀 lit up. Impressive.

Obviously the layers and complexity of this wine are second to none. Unique and delicious.

Did you notice I only outlined that 2 1/2 barrels were bottled? The winemaker Darren has continued the revolution with the other half the barrel which was kept and filled with the 2019 Riesling.

So my first wine to review under the new system. Hope you enjoy. Still have some trial and error but I think this is a good start with a solid C+. This is a great little Pinot Gris from Marlborough in New Zealand. If you like Sav Blanc from there then you will enjoy this too. It really does taste like peaches and cream. I thought this was good value at $14 when I bought it, but a quick check and its $10 at Liquorland (no affiliation). I'm going to buy more at that price...simple...

This latest wine I received from Selina Estate Wine called You, Me and Pinot Grigio actually makes a beautiful cocktail.

2️⃣ 15ml Simple Syrup (just a sugar liquid that is added to a lot of cocktails)

1️⃣ Add You, Me and Pinot Gri-gio, simple syrup, gin, lemon juice and peach schnapps to a cocktail shaker and fill with ice, Side note; if you don’t have a cocktail shaker, you can use a protein shaker.

2️⃣ Shake then strain into a chilled martini glass.

(Don’t forget to use the peaches for dessert. Just add cream)

Almost dead, unfortunately. Extremely earthy, but it might do alright with a risotto or pasta with mushrooms.

Wow..! This is incredible. Open it half an hour before serving, and serve it chilled - not cold. Caramel, browned butter, prune, leather and cinnamon.

Grand old Grauburgunder in an Auslese version.

A funky fella... Exotic fruit (mango, banana, litchi and pineapple) combined with a serious touch of oak.

 Henninger - Pfalz / Rheinpfalz, Germany🇩🇪 Tasted: Summer

Mick and Jeanine Craven focus on crafting wines that express the unique Stellenbosch terroir; they work with organic growers of particular vineyard sites with “unique soils and micro-climates”.

Grapes are from a young vines in “sedimentary rock, cemented into a duricrust by iron oxides. Locally this red soil is called Koffieklip or Coffee Stone”.

Spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts in open top vats on the skins for 6 days with occasional light pumpovers and punch-downs. “The skins were quite thick and tannic in 2019 due to drought, so they decided to limit extraction.”

Aged for 8 months in old French oak tonneau, unfined, unfiltered, with a minimal amount of SO2.

Ruby-coral in colour, with alluring aromas of blood orange, wild cherry, strawberry, hibiscus flower, iron minerality and amber resin. Pomegranate, cherry, red apple and red currant are flanked by green tea tannins and fresh acidity.

Black cherry, along with a trace of elder flower liqueur linger on the smoky finish.

Their estate is located on a ridge 600 meters in elevation, comprised of Prehistoric rocks and soil in Forest Range, Adelaide Hills.

Hand harvested, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, 8 weeks skin contact, no added S02, unfiltered, unfined.

Ruby coral in colour, with aromas of cherry, strawberry, watermelon, sea spray, iron and talc minerality.

Wild strawberry, red currant, pomegranate, sour cherry and orange zest are flanked by fresh acidity and green tea tannins.

Herbs, cherry, peach pit and iron minerality comprise the cleansing bitter finish.

18 year old vines are in limestone and sandstone soils.

Hand harvested, fermentation with native yeasts, skin contact for 25 days, elevage on the fine lees in foudre [large wood casks].

Coral in colour, with aromas of apricot, orange, amber resin, frankincense, melon and wildflowers.

Blood orange, nectarine, apricot, candied ginger, white pepper and chalky minerality are glossed by citrus acidity.

Pink grapefruit, and nectarine linger on the crisp, mineral driven finish. Vivid, charismatic, engaging.
