Beautiful color with a fine orange rim that doesn’t seem too oxidized.

The bouquet started offering notes of port, brown apple and prunes, but after a bit of air it blew off and revealed quite a youthful and fresh Nebbiolo for its age. Strawberry (fresh and candied), dried sweet cherry, pressed flowers, orange peel, tar, thyme, mint, charcuterie and rusty metal followed on the nose. The oak is clear too.

The palate was medium(+)-bodied with well integrated tannins and a vibrant acidity. Cherry, cranberry, raw liquorice, dark chocolate, cloves, spicy vanilla and mint. A taste of chalk and iron in the finish.

• Grapes from different small (and younger) parcels at Bussia

• Fermented in steel tanks (8 days skin contact - brings a deep color but lower tannic level) with indigenous yeast

• Aged a few months in steel tanks followed by some months in barrique

An estate of the elite in the Barolo area. The history dates back to 1969, when Aldo left him and his brothers (Giacomo Conterno) wine business to start his own adventure with more modern philosophies, following Angelo Gaja, meaning shorter maceration and some barrique next to the large Slavonian barrels.

Aldo Conterno passed away in 2012, leaving the winery to his three sons, France, Giacomo and Stefano, who were all working with their father during his last yeast.

They work organically without certification, farms 25 ha with very low yields - a total of 80.000 bottles pr. year.

Grapes are from various vineyards in the Barbaresco DOCG, with a mix of limestone, clay, sandy streaks, calcium rich soils. Aged 24 months in large oak casks.

Transparent garnet in colour, with aromas of rose, cherry, strawberry, tarry earth, trace of baking spice.

Fine grain tannins and fresh acidity frame strawberry, blackberry, rose petal, white pepper, cigar box spice and a wisp of cedar smoke.

Subtle spice and tarry earth linger on the red fruit finish.

To all Nebbiolo fans out there, keep your eyes peeled for this! Here’s a stunning example of an Aussie Nebbiolo by Virago in Beechworth that’s well worth tracking down. It’s the result of five different Nebbiolo clones grown by Karen and Prue, the Vignerons, and a little helping hand from none other than Rick Kinzbrunner. What a riddiculously good set-up!!

On the nose the 2015 shows beautifully lifted florals, cherries, anise, and undergrowth in what can only be described as a heavenly perfume. It steps up a gear on the palate as the dark cherry flavours and bright acidty intermingle with darker fruits and rustic, earthy, leathery notes. It’s  perhaps the best Aussie Neb I’ve had!!

For me it’s a fantastic wine from vintage of the decade in Piedmont. Bruno Rocca Langhe Nebbiolo 2016. Such an awesome expression of Nebbiolo that’s beautiful now and clearly going to evolve for years to come. It’s entry level for Bruno Rocca wines made from Barbaresco vineyards with younger vines, up to 15 years old. It packs an awesome flavour punch to complete with the bigger names and price tags for sure. I can’t wait to explore more of what they have to offer! This could easily become an addiction.... Glad I’m stocking up!! 🍷🍇

If it was good enough for Thomas Jefferson it’s good enough for me. Such an interesting wine! Made to match tasting notes from Thomas Jefferson’s European travels in the 1700s this Nebbiolo ticks a lot of boxes. Light, translucent ruby, in the glass with fantastic fresh red fruit characteristics of rose, cherry, hints of raspberry. Fruity, but not over sweet and it has the faintest hint of fizz due to fermentation finishing in bottle. This is a decent drop for people keen to explore different expressions of Nebbiolo, I’d happy buy this again! 🍷🍷

Mario Minuto established Moccagatta in 1952 in the small village of same name located just south of the town of Barbaresco.

Today, the winery is run by Mario’s sons, Sergio and Francesco, and their children too.

Moccagatta is a modernist styled winery, using barrique for aging of which 20% are new (the rest 2nd and 3rd use) and short maceration (around 7 days).

The winery has worked 100% organically since 2014.

Needed a bit of time to let go of some oxidized “damp basement” scent. Afterwords, a “classic” aged Nebbiolo appeard (maybe a bit too oxi still) with a bouquet offering as scent of aged port with lower alcohol, prunes, cherry, sweet liquorice, (very) old books, pencil shavings, truffle, wet wood, used leather sole, matured meat and black hibiscus tea.

On the tongue, the wine is medium-bodied and well balanced with silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Ripe cherry, warm prunes, dehydrated mushrooms, black tea with red berries, bresaola, juniper berry and iodine in the finish.

ℹ️ This wine is 💯 Nebbiolo from the Barbaresco region in Piedmont, Italy. Barbaresco was granted Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) status in 1966 and Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status in 1980. This wine was aged for a minimum of 4 years before release, but realistically probably even longer at that time. This wine was made by Beppe Colla who is considered one of the Patriarchs of Barolo and Barbaresco. Prunotto was sold to the Antinori family in 1994 as Beppe Colla retired from such a large scale operation. In 1994 Beppe Colla, Tino (brother) Colla, and Frederica (niece) started Poderi Colla. Beppe Colla passed away in January 2019 at 88 years old and 2019 would have marked his 70th harvest·

🔔 I could not have asked for a better bottle. If you come across these bottles from a good vintage, it is worth the investment. 1967 is a great vintage, and the wines of Prunotto under the ownership and winemaking of Beppe Colla are legendary for those in the know. This wine was enjoyed over 4 hours, and each 30-minute taste exposed more and more of this wine's potential. This wine is clearly at peak if not even a bit beyond it, but still stellar none the less·

All of the wines tasted were from Nebbiolo and a single vineyard. From the Rosato in Rio Sordo, to the Langhe Nebbiolo, to the Sori Montaribaldi Barbaresco.

1993 Ceretto Bricco Rocche - Barolo Brunate (92 pts)

- Medium garnet core and faded pale garnet rim. Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of charred wood, smoked meat, dried leaves, dried cherries, enoki mushrooms, black truffle, and sanguine (aka blood or iron). The palate is dry, high acidity, medium+ spicy (cardamom) tannins, medium+ alcohol, and medium- body. The palate is more delicate than the nose. The bloody notes are pervasive along with the tree bark and dried leaves notes. The fruit is non existent on the palate. More tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, mushrooms and smoked meat. The finish is medium+ length while this is complex it will not improve and is on the slow decline, but should drink well for 5-10 years.

 1993 Ceretto Bricco Rocche - Barolo Brunate (92 pts)

ℹ️ This wine is 💯 Nebbiolo from the northwestern corner of the Piedmont region in Italy. The wine must be at least 90% Nebbiolo, which is locally referred to as Spanna. Gattinara was awarded DOCG status in 1990.  The soils of Gattinara are volcanic with a noticeable red color due to the high iron and mineral content. The wine was aged for three years before release with two years in large Slavonian oak barrels.

👃 Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of dried currant, dried cherry, dried leaves, oregano, wilted flowers, wood charcoal, tar, orange bitters, and sun-dried tomato.

👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, medium- resolved tannins, medium alcohol (13%), and medium body.  A lot of suspended fine sediment in the wine. A medium length finish of dried cherry, oregano, and orange bitters.

🔔 This Gattinara was past prime, but still enjoyable to drink if you wine with age. Any time I get that sun-dried tomato note on the nose, I know the wine is starting to fall down from gradual oxidation. The palate showed more life, with an intriguing orange bitters note. Overall, it was a fun tasting experience still, though it would have been better ten years ago.

ℹ️ Produttori del Barbaresco's wines are always 💯 Nebbiolo. Produttori del Barbaresco is arguably the most exemplary wine cooperative in the world. The cooperative was founded in 1958 by bringing together 19 small growers to pull their resources to survive the post-war era economic crisis. They only produced one wine, but in 1967 they launched Riserva bottlings. The cooperative now has 51 grower members across 100+ hectares. The winemaking at the Produttori del Barbaresco is a beacon of tradition with up to 30 days on the skins in tank followed by aging 24 months in botti.

🔔 The 1978 vintage is excellent in Piedmont, but at this age, it is more about storage than pedigree. This bottle was in impeccable shape. I am always impressed on how well a bottle that costs $40 (current release prices) can age so gracefully. I could argue that maybe this was better a few years ago, but I found this very enjoyable. There was a slight VA note in the background, but other than that, it was exactly as expected. Produttori del Barbaresco is a flag-bearer for the region, embodying typicity, consistency, quality, and value.

🍇 Nebbiolo is such an age-worthy grape. Opening an aged Barolo never fails to amaze me at how young these wines can taste after so many years in the bottle. 2016 Fratelli Alessandria - Barolo (92 pts)

ℹ️ This wine 💯 Nebbiolo from the appellation of Barolo in the Piedmont region of Italy. The Alessandria family has been making Barolo in the town of Verduno since 1870. The grapes come from a selection of vineyards in Verduno and Monforte d'Alba. The unique soils of Verduno are a mix of sand and clay with a high proportion of limestone. The average vine age is 25 years old. Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged for three years in older Slavonian and French oak barrels. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

👃 Pronounced intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe and stewed black cherry, black plum, dried potpourri, clove, cinnamon stick, leather (new shoes), and grapefruit bitters.

👄 The wine is dry, high acidity, high drying tannins, high alcohol (14.5%), and medium+ body. The tannins are grippy and drying with noticeable spice on the palate. A medium+ length finish of ripe black fruit, grapefruit bitters, and cinnamon spice.

🔔 The 2016 Barolo from Fratelli Alessandria is filled with that classic Verduno spiciness. Overall, there was a warmth to this wine, and it craves to be paired with heartier fare. This needs a fair amount of air if consumed now, but patience will reward those who can cellar this for a few more years. The wines from Fratelli Alessandria always offer fantastic value for the price, especially as you go up to some of the single cru bottlings. Don't sleep on this producer.

2016 Roganto - Nebbiolo Baja California (86 pts)

ℹ️ Roganto was founded in 1987 by 2 friends, Rogelio Sánchez del Palacio and Antonio Luis Escalante Domínguez. The winery started to sell wine commercially in 2001. These wines have gotten a lot of praise by the Sommelier community in Mexico. The vineyard is located in the San Vicente Valley of Baja California. These wines are aged 24 months in a combination of French and American oak·

👃 Medium- intensity on the nose. Aromas of toast, oolong tea, cedar, dill, boysenberry, and raspberry·

👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, high grippy tannins, medium+ alcohol, and medium body. There is a lot of oak on the palate. Toast, smoke, char, cedar, clove, and dill. Underneath all of that is some nice ripe fruit. Ripe boysenberry, blackberry, and raspberry. Good chalky texture. Balanced alcohol. Medium+ length finish, but largely oak driven flavors·

🔔 There is serious fruit in this wine, but it seems to be covered up by a copious amount of oak. While I get the appeal and complexity, in some way this tastes more like a Cabernet Sauvignon than a Nebbiolo. Fruit is ripe, not overextracted. Alcohol is integrated. Tannins are big and brawny, but provided great texture too. Most importantly acidity is preserved. Hoping the oak regiment comes gets dialed in soon. A winery to watch out for from Mexico. Now if I can get my hands on some of their even higher end wines·

1989 Gaja -  Costa Russi Barbaresco (98 pts)

ℹ️ This wine is mostly Nebbiolo with a touch (~5%) of Barbera blended from the single vineyard site in the Barbaresco appellation of Piedmont, Italy. From 1996 to 2011, these wines were labeled under the Langhe appellation. Starting in 2013, the wines were once again labeled as Barbaresco wines with a renewed commitment to 💯 Nebbiolo.

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe and dried black cherry, red plum, sweet tobacco, cedar, thyme, lavender, dried flowers, dry anise, earthy, and slight black truffle.

👄 The wine is dry, high acidity, medium+ powdery tannins, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), and medium body. The palate is layered and silky, while the tannins build with each sip. An extremely long length finish of black cherry, tobacco, lavender, and earthy spices.

🔔 Gaja's single-vineyard bottlings are always world-class, but this is a monumental wine that still has so much more life ahead of it. The color is barely showing signs of age. The bouquet has a good mix of fresh fruit and developing aromas. The palate and texture is the star of the show. It is silky and elegant but firm and structured. The Costa Russi was allowed to develop in the glass and tasted over 8 hours like a conversation with an old friend you haven't seen in years. To sum it up in one word: WOW! 🤩🤩🤩

1978 Produttori del Barbaresco - Almost 40 years old and still showing some fruit, but tons of tertiary aromas. Dried cherry, tobacco, dried leaves, smoke, smoked meat, violets and menthol. Tannins are really resolved and make the wine quite smooth. The palate shows the strong acidic backbone. Aged Barbaresco is not for everyone, but I am smitten with it.

ℹ️ This wine 💯 Nebbiolo from the appellation of Barolo in the Piedmont region of Italy. Aldo Vajra was one of the first Producers to adopt organic farming practices in 1971. The grapes come from a selection of high elevation vineyards (380 m to 480 m) with various southernly exposures. Albe is an hommage to the traditionally blended Barolo wines of the past. Grapes from each vineyard are hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented separately in stainless steel tanks. The wines are aged for 30 months in large Slavonian casks, with blending occurring right before the bottling.

👃 Pronounced intensity on the nose. Aromas of carnations, roses, ripe Bing cherry, raspberry, cranberry, white pepper, tree bark, and pen ink.

👄 The wine is dry, high acidity, high ripe tannins, high alcohol (14.5%), and medium+ body. The tannins, although powerful, have a sweet ripeness to them that makes the palate very smooth. A medium+ length finish of sweet red cherry, carnations, and subtle peppery spice.

🔔 The 2016 Albe Barolo from G. D. Vajra is a beautiful entry point for people looking to explore the wines of Barolo and not need to cellar it for decades. However, I do recommend decanting it. This bottle was tasted over three days, and it improved with each day. Albe is a modern classic Baroli with elegant florals, ripe red fruit, and subtle ink and spice notes. Overall, it is tough to beat the quality that you are getting with this wine for the price.

🔔 This wine is deemed "modern" especially at the time it was made due to the use of French oak barriques. However, after such a long time in bottle, the oak notes have melted into the background. There is more depth of color and concentration of fruit than many more "traditional" Barolo wines. At 31 years old, this wine is still showing remarkably well. Based on this bottle and a tasting note from a few years ago, this seems to be at the peak and on a plateau. A great example of a reasonably priced Barolo cellaring for three decades. I would be curious to check in on a more current release of the wine·

ℹ️ This wine is 💯 Nebbiolo. This wine comes from the Barbaresco appellation in the Piedmont region of Italy. Giovanni Gaja stopped sourcing fruit from other growers in 1961 to ensure the quality of the fruit by using estate-grown fruit. Giovanni’s son, Angelo Gaja, produces single-vineyard bottling in the 1970s, which put Barbaresco on the map·

👄The wine is dry, high acidity, low resolves tannins, medium+ alcohol (~13.5%), and medium body. Medium+ length dried cherries, leather, and thyme·

🔔 While I can say this is not the best bottle of 1964 Barbaresco/Barolo that I have ever had, but it was still holding on. The nose blossomed with air showing tertiary development dried fruits and herbs. There was a surprising amount of fruit still left on the palate. This wine reminded me of aged red Burgundy from the 80s. If you love old wine, this would be truly enjoyable over a few hours. Many people love fruit and tight tannins, and for those people, this would be one foot in the grave. I am clearly in the former group, the true sign of an excellent bottle for me is that it makes me think and forget about what is happening around me. This bottle did that for me, and I barely managed to capture my notes until the last glass. Gaja is Gaja·

2013 Produttori del Barbaresco - Montestefano Barbaresco Riserva (93 pts)

ℹ️ This wine is 💯 Nebbiolo from the Montestefano cru of Barbaresco, in the Piedmont region of Italy. The Montestefano cru is in the Eastern part of the village of Barbaresco. The elevation is 230-280 m and has a Southern exposure. The soils have a higher concentration of calcium content than most of the other vineyards in Barbaresco. The wines of Montestefano are often riper due to the Southern exposure, resulting in fuller body and higher tannins. It was first produced as a single vineyard in 1974.

👃 Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of violets, roses, bing cherry, dried strawberry, mission fig, rhubarb, blood orange peel, tree bark, tobacco, and earthy.

👄 The wine is dry, high acidity, high drying tannins, medium+ alcohol (14%), and medium body. The acidity and tannins dominate the palate, which is still quite brooding.  The finish is medium+ length of sweet cherry, citrus peel, and earthy notes.

🔔 Montestefano can be broader wine than some other Crus, but this bottle was very tightly wound. The floral notes and red fruits were in good concentration, albeit on the delicate side. There is a lot of structure here, starting with acidity and finishing with a tannic bite at the end. This wine craves food alongside it, but it certainly needs 5-10 more years in the cellar.

🤔 Sometimes you just get mesmerized by a wine. After being trapped in a bottle for so long this need air to come alive. The next thing you know the bottle is empty and I almost forgot to take notes. The key word is "almost"·

ℹ️ This wine is 💯 Nebbiolo from two estate vineyards from the Barolo appellation in the Piedmont region of Italy. One vineyard is located in Serralunga, and the other is located in La Morra. In both cases, Gaja makes Cru bottlings out of adjacent vineyards. The grapes from each vineyard are harvested and vinified separately. The wines are aged in French oak barrels for 12 months and then blended. The wine is aged an additional 18 months in botti. 2016 is considered an exceptional vintage in Barolo.

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe red currant, Bing cherry, rose, rose stems, oak, smoke, orange peel, twizzler, and a slightly herbal spicy mint note.

👄 The wine is dry, high acidity, high drying tannins, high alcohol (14%), and medium body. The palate has a ton of structure despite the moderate weight. A medium+ length finish of ripe red fruit, oak spice, and mint tea.

🔔 2016 DaGromis is probably the best vintage of this wine that I have tasted. No doubt this is due to the exceptional quality of the 2016 vintage and the pedigree of winemaking. None of the wines from Gaja would be considered "affordable," but given the factors above, this seems like a relative "value" in the lineup. This wine skirts the line of Modern and Traditional. Definitely modern due to the use of barrel, which is noticeable, but still Traditional due to the restrained profile. Well done!

offered up aged Italian gems from a cellar that they acquired at pretty reasonable prices. I took the opportunity to pick up a few aged Gattinara wines. I haven't had a Gattinara with so much age on it (1964). I was able to pick up a Nervi Riserva and a regular bottling

. It should be interesting to open up this piece of history. This seems like a perfect job for the Zwiesel Conterno Sensory Glass

2011 Proprietà Sperino - Lessona (93 pts)

 - First off this wine has a great story behind it. This wine is made by the de Marchi family who own Isole & Olena that make great elegant Chiant Classicos and Cepparello the famous Sangiovese based Super Tuscan. There hometown is in Northern Piedmont. In 1999 they returned to their family estate in Lessona, cleared the forest that grew around the vines and started making this 💯 Nebbiolo wine and blend of Nebbiolo, Vespolina, and Croatina called Uvaggio. The prodigal sons have returned to restore Lessona's wine making legacy to what it once was in turn of the 20th century. .

Let's get into the 🍷. Medium- ruby color with a pale garnet rim. Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, raspberry, violets, anise, coffee, and a hint of menthol. On the palate the wine is dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium+ grippy yet fine tannins, and medium body. There is a weightiness to the wine, but it's only medium body which is confusing me in a good way. Ripe dark cherry and blackberry to start. Quickly follows into dried flowers, anise, and tobacco. And finishes with a long finish that I can only describe as wild berry sorbet with mint. There is a creaminess that is why I am saying sorbet. By far this is the best Lessona I have ever tried albeit a small sample size. There is an elegant and refinement to the wine. It's a little lighter in terms of structure than Barolo or Barbaresco, but balances flavor, great acidity, and elegant fine tannins in a harmonious package. Well done! 👏
