My Tasmanian odyssey continues with this absolute gem from Jonny and Matt Hughes of Mewstone under their Hughes and Hughes label. -

Firstly, the colour is a joke. Screams red fruits, cranberry freshness and twiggy goodness. All but confirmed by an enticing perfume which is barely contained by the glass. It’s as if it wants to escape, amazing really. Enjoyment factor increases with the first sip. There’s a sweet / tart balancing act going on as the red fruited and twiggy herbaceous notes mix with juicy acidity. Reminds me of a sour cherry lolly, just less sour and buckets of deliciousness. Add it to your list of Tassie gems to get your hands on!! ⁠

. For me, possibly the best characteristics any wine can have. What makes this such a beautiful wine? The vineyard for starters. The Pinot Noir is grown on a north-facing slope, as south as south can be in Tasmania, with maritime influences throughout the growing season. ⁠

The wine? Pinot with body. Pinot for Shiraz lovers⁠ who say they don’t drink Pinot. Lusciously deep. Hits all the dark fruits imaginable and oozes earthy complexity. Whole bunches used to add structure and a genius acid profile complemented by beautiful oak. It’s in my top two reds of the year for sure, might push top spot if I can save some for tomorrow. ⁠

Plus, it’s a magnum, hands down best format for a wine but⁠ enough about that.

2013 Arnot-Roberts - North Coast Syrah (88 pts)

ℹ️ Tasted double blind aka zero context. Arnot-Roberts is highly regarded as one of the champions for cool climate wine in California. Wines that are picked at optimal ripeness. These wines are never jammy or high octane·

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe blueberry, red plum, bramble, stemmy, licorice, Chinese  Medicine, and something green almost green pepper·

👄 The wine was dry, high acidity, medium fine grained tannins, medium alcohol, and medium body. Palate has a mix of ripe black fruit, herbal flavors, earthiness, and spice. Medium length finish·

🔔 Clearly a well made wine. Honestly, this didn't scream Syrah to me. I will be a snob for a minute, because if it doesn't taste like Northern Rhone then it doesn't register as my 'ideal' Syrah. I realize they are still trying to be Californian Syrah. Blind I thought this was a modern Chinon producer 🤷‍♂️. The greenness bothered me a bit. Love cool climate wines, but not always a fan of combining whole cluster fermentation as it can cover up fruit. Alcohol was in balance and great texture overall·

Koonara wines have produced a great Chardonnay that is punching above its weight.

Crisp pink lady apple with layer of creamy buttery flavour, which is subtle but creates yet another layer of this well balanced and a quality Chardonnay.

This beauty is from Orange, NSW and been handpicked from the best Pinot available. Normally I choose a Pinot from the Mornington or Tassie but this wine has really made me look at wines from Orange (again). About $50 but well worth it. I’ve had Wines from Orange previously but this is next level and how much the Region has developed and killing the cool climate wines at the moment. Well done to
