At 171 years old, the vines that produce the Cirillo Estate 1850 Grenache are believed to be the oldest in the world, making this somewhat of a unicorn and a little too hard to resist! It’s going for a long sleep in the cellar... couldn’t help myself!

Here’s to my hat trick of Riesling posts and a gem of a producer I stumbled across in the Macedon Ranges… Lyons Will Estate.

To date I’ve tried the Gamay and Chardonnay, both beautiful wines, and today the Riesling had its time in the limelight. First off, this is unlike most young Rieslings here in Australia, it’s less racy more luscious, mouthy and perfumed than usual. Fruity, tangy, with a touch of old oak character. Bigger in body, wider in flavour than I was expecting and all the better for it. It’s a super interesting expression of the variety, one I’d love to see with a few years under its belt.

Biodynamic, Estate grown, Shiraz and Grenache deliver beautiful red and blue berry fruit flavours that’re crisp, racy and fresh with great depth. Mataro doing the business with an earthy and savoury backbone allowing the fruits to shine. It’s so incredibly drinkable and you can’t ask for more than that!

The Pinot Noir.  Opens with a purity of red fruits, earthy, smokey, spicy awesomeness follow and then there’s the minerality... epic. All this supported by exceptional tannins and acidity. Pinot mastery here on full display. —

Purple Hands 2018 Old Vine Barossa Valley Grenache

I must admit until this year I hadn’t really heard of Purple Hands Wines, but thankful I have now. These guys are making some great wines. Killing it in fact. I have reviewed their wines previously and loved them all, so it was time to taste the Old Vine Grenache from the Barossa.

This is hand picked from old gnarly vines, basket pressed and fermented the old school way. So far ticking all my favourite things in wine making. The taste does not disappoint. Soft but still has a great flavour. Can I taste the age of the vines? Yes, this wine is not trying to punch you in the throat or be loud and trying to prove a point. It’s elegant and softly spoken, just like your grandfather. You take it all in and listen to every word...simple...
