The Montestefano cru is in the Eastern part of the village of Barbaresco. The elevation is 230-280 m and has a Southern exposure. The soils have a higher concentration of calcium content than most of the other vineyards in Barbaresco. The wines of Montestefano are often riper due to the Southern exposure, resulting in fuller body and higher tannins. It was first produced as a single vineyard in 1974. 👁 Medium ruby color with a pale rim. 👃 Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of violets, roses, bing cherry, dried strawberry, mission fig, rhubarb, blood orange peel, tree bark, tobacco, and earthy. 👄 The wine is dry, high acidity, high drying tannins, medium+ alcohol (14%), and medium body. The acidity and tannins dominate the palate, which is still quite brooding. The finish is medium+ length of sweet cherry, citrus peel, and earthy notes. 🔔 Montestefano can be broader wine than some other Crus, but this bottle was very tightly wound. The floral notes and red fruits were in good concentration, albeit on the delicate side. There is a lot of structure here, starting with acidity and finishing with a tannic bite at the end.
