Burlotto Barolo “Acclivi”, 2011 📍Verduno, Barolo, Piemonte, Italy🇮🇹 🍇 100% Nebbiolo ⚡️15% Tasted: February 2021 In the northern part of Barolo, in Verduno, Giovan Battista Burlotto was in the 1850’s among the first Barolo pioneers to make the Barolo as we know it today, and already in the late 19th century, their wines were well reputed outside the Italian borders and they served as royal suppliers in Savoy and followed the duke of Abruzzi on the Polar expedition in 1899. It’s remains a family business, today led by Fabio, who sticks to the old traditions of the house. The estate holds 12 hectares of vineyards mainly located in Verduno. They mainly work organically but without certification. “Acclivi” is a blend of different vineyards (in 350-420 meters altitude) to promote the expression of Verduno - generally quite a concentrated wine. The must undergoes a 15-day maceration followed by malolactic fermentation on steel before resting 2,5 years in Slavonian and Allier oak barrels of 35-50 hectoliters. - Around 5.000 bottles made. Fine and harmonious Barolo with a bouquet revealing ripe cherry, cranberry, sweet strawberry, dusty raw liquorice, rose and lavender, chestnut, light fresh leather and tar. Not the most complex nose, but definitely great, elegantly balanced and precise.
The palate offered very ripe red berry flavors, prunes, pomegranate, vanilla, mushrooms and liquorice. The acidity is refreshing and the tannins are super smooth and very well integrated. Was hard to blind the village zone. Had the finesse of La Morra and the power from Castiglione.
