2016 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Roussanne Vieilles Vignes (95 pts) @familleperrin ℹ️ This wine is 💯 Roussanne from 100+ year old vines that were planted in 1909 in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Most producers in the region make a white blend with many grape varieties, but Château de Beaucastel focuses on Roussanne. These grapes were hand-harvested weeks after the younger vine Roussanne. The grapes are gently whole-cluster pressed and then transferred to French oak barrels for 10 months, with 50% being new with the remainder 2nd and 3rd year barrels. The wine does not usually go through malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged in bottle for 6 months before release. Production is around 500 cases. 👁 Deep lemon color. 👃 Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of overripe yellow peach, canned pear, cantaloupe, grilled pineapple, orange blossom, oak, candle wax, smoke, vanilla cream, anise, and lemon verbena. 👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, high alcohol (14%), and full body. Huge weight and concentration that is like a high-end olive oil. A long length finish of canned peaches and grilled pineapple then trailing off to lemon verbena and wax. 🔔 This wine is not for the faint of heart as it is concentrated and potent. A white wine that slaps you around while you are swirling on the palate. You feel the heft, and right before it gets to the edge of being too much, the acidity brings it back. The alcohol is a healthy 14%, if not even a tad more, but this wine holds it well. The oak is clearly there but works well with the flavor profile. While not something I can drink every day, these wines are intense and demand your attention. The layers of concentration ripple through the palate from start to finish. This wine is still in the caterpillar phase, but when they get to the butterfly phase (10+ years) the wines become truly unique. I'm going to hide a bottle in the cellar and forget about it. 💰~$150 #vin #lovewine #🍷 #wineterroir #wine #roussanne #vieillesvignes #chateauneufdupape #chateaudebeaucastel #familleperrin
