Château Léoville Las Cases is 1 of 15 Second Growths in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. This wine is a blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Petit Verdot. 1990 was an excellent vintage in Bordeaux with a very hot summer and perfect weather through to harvest. 👁 Deep ruby color with a medium rim and a slight garnet hue. 👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry, black plum, sweet tobacco, leather, dried log, cedar, dried leaves, lead pencil, gravel, wood charcoal, and wilted rose. 👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium ripe tannins, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), and full body. The fruit profile on the palate is still fresh fruit and has not turned into dried fruit flavors yet. A long length finish of concentrated black fruit, sweet tobacco, lead pencil, and dried leaves. 🔔 Château Léoville Las Cases always seems to age slowly, and this bottle at 30 years is amazingly youthful. There is some development on the nose, but the freshness of the fruit is still there in spades. The fruit is so concentrated on the palate that it reminds me of crème de cassis. There is a lot of weight to this wine due to the heat of the vintage, but the ABV is barely noticeable. If you own this, I recommend additional cellaring or at least decanting for 3-4 hours. In the 1990 vintage, LLC is on par or, in many cases, better than the First Growths. Yes, LLC is one of the most expensive "Super Seconds," but there is a reason for that price tag.
