2015 MicroBio Wines - Issé Viñador Soñador Verdejo (89 pts) @microbio _wines @selectionsdelavina · 🙋‍♂️ Have you tried an Amphora aged wine❓· ℹ️ This is 💯 Verdejo, from an old vine pre-phylloxera single vineyard planted in 1868. (Phylloxera - you know that pesky louse the wiped out most vineyards in Europe). The vines are planted in Nieva which is in the wine region of Rueda, Spain. The wine with high turbidity (meaning with gross lees and not skins) is fermented and aged in unlined amphora. Minimal intervention, slow fermentation over several months. Then aged a year in Amphora and an additional year in stainless steel· 👁 Cloudy, Medium gold color· 👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of marcona almond, copper penny, bruised apple, slight butterscotch, apricot, waxy, chartreuse, and a touch of apple cider vinegar· 👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol, and medium+ body. Great texture, almost powdery. A medium+ length finish of apple skin, apricots, and nuts. A slight bitterness on the finish· 🔔 As a person with a very diverse drinking profile, this is out there even for me. I have never had anything quite like it, I am glad this isn't labeled as a wine from Rueda or it would be misleading. In fact they technically cannot be Ruedo DO due to their small size, which is astonishing to me. These vines are so old that they are clearly concentrated, but I am not sure how much is Winemaking or lack thereof. They are unique and a very interesting endeavor by MicroBio to do something with small plots of treasured old vines. I hand carried this wine back from Madrid, but now I am curious to try more.
