1986 Marqués de Murrieta - Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Blanco (100 pts) @marquesdemurrieta @riojawine · 🙋‍♂️ What was the most memorable white wine you have tasted❓· ℹ️ This wine is from Rioja, Spain. It is 97% Viura and 3% Malvasia. The grapes for this wine come a specific parcel from Pago Capellanía, which was planted in 1945 at an altitude of 485 m in the highest area of their Finca Ygay (Rioja Alta) estate vineyard. The wine was aged in American oak barrique for 21 years, then concrete for almost 6 years. The wine was in bottled in January 2014 and then rested for almost 3 years before release. Sidenote: There was a small limited release of this wine in 1992· 👁 Medium amber color· 👃 Pronounced intensity on the nose. Aromas of salted marcona almond, dried flowers, acacia, chrysanthemum tea, honey, beeswax, orange peel, grilled apricot, grilled peach, lemon curd, Greek yogurt, oak, pickle juice, and butterscotch candy· 👄 The wine is dry, high vibrant acidity, medium alcohol, and medium+ body. A great weight creamy texture, than has some coarseness to it. A ridiculously long length finish of salted almonds, high end honey, dried apricot, and chrysanthemum tea· 🔔 This wine is expensive at $500 a bottle, BUT this was aged for an ungodly amount of time at the winery. Is it worth it, well that is a personal question based on your financial situation. What I can say is that is a truly singular experience. I give this wine a 100 points not lightly, this is at peak maturity and may improve, but it would probably be complex in a different way. The wine morphed constantly in the glass, showing new things at every turn. There are only 8,000 bottles of this and is one of the finest white wines that I have ever tasted. It is now seared into my mind. I swear I can still taste it 😱. If you need a 1 word description, it would be Mind-blowing, does that count as 1 word❓🦄🍷😍
