2007 Château Trotanoy - Pomerol (92 pts) @dreyfusashby · 🙋‍♂️ How do you define a boutique winery❓· ℹ️ This wine was tasted at a single blind tasting of 2007 Bordeaux. Château Trotanoy is from the right bank of Bordeaux in Pomerol. This Chateau is owned by the Moueix family, who happen to know a thing or two about making the world's best Merlot (aka Château Petrus). The vineyard area is only 7.6 hectares which results in about 2,250 cases a year. Considered boutique by Bordeaux standards. The vineyard is planted to 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc with an average age of 25 years old. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels with up to 50% being new· 👁 Deep ruby color with a pale rim· 👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, raspberry, herbal, tomato leaf, violets, oak, baking spice, and leather· 👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium+ velvety tannins, medium+ alcohol, and medium+ body. Polished mouthfeel that was quite round. A long finish of blackcurrant and violets· 🔔 This was 2 of 8 for me in this tasting. The group ranked this as 5 of 8. This wine improved considerably after we finished the tasting. Silky and smooth. When I saw that this wine historically had very minimal reviews from Critics, it posits the question if this wine just didn't show well when young as it was quite impressive in the glass· 😎 My blind call was that this was a St. Estèphe. Good fruit concentration, oak was present but not a large percentage of new oak. Again this was a Bordeaux Tasting so this led me to think of St. Estèphe or St. Julien. Blackcurrant and Blackberry made me think of Cabernet Sauvignon. Tomato leaf can by another expression of Cabernet pyrazines. In no way was I thinking this was mostly Merlot from Pomerol 🤦‍♂️· In Blind, We Trust 😎
