2015 Rideau Vineyard - Château Duplantier (88 pts) @rideauvineyard · 🙋‍♂️ Which red grape varieties make the best blend❓· ℹ️ This wine is from Santa Barbara County, California. The blend is 35% Syrah, 25% Mourvèdre, 21% Grenache, and 19% Petite Sirah. Fermented on skins with a small portion of dried stem inclusion. Aged in French oak for 22 months with only 5% being new· 👁 Medium ruby color· 👃 Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe blackberry, blueberry, boysenberry, lavender, pancake batter, and earth· 👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, medium ripe tannins, high alcohol, and full body. The fruit is ripe and brooding on the palate. Some salt and pepper spice on the palate. Alcohol feels hotter than stated on the bottle which is mostly noticed on the medium length peppery finish· 🔔 Doing a series from Rideau Vineyard's and on paper I thought I would like this the best. The nose has pure ripe fruit, but it took awhile to show itself. This wine improved dramatically over a few days of air. The acidity is very impressive, tannins are ripe and round. The biggest issue I had is that the wine feels significantly hotter than 14.1% ABV on the bottle. Stay tuned for the next review on their estate grown Mourvèdre.
