2016 Occidental - Freestone-Occidental Pinot Noir (92 pts) @occidentalwines · 🙋‍♂️ What are your thoughts on California Pinot Noir❓· ℹ️ Occidental is Steve Kistler's new Pinot Noir project in the Sonoma Coast headlands around Bodega, CA. What I love most is that this a family operation! Steve's daughter Catherine Kistler is working side by side learning the trade with her father. A good winemaker maybe completes 40 vintages in an attempt to hone their craft, which isn't a lot given the complexity of variables each year. In my opinion, generational farming is the key to understanding the great vineyard sites of the new world· 👁 Medium ruby color· 👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe crunchy red fruit, cranberry, redcurrant, floral, violet, hibiscus, and smoked duck· 👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, medium- chalky tannins, medium alcohol, and medium- body. Definite chalky texture. Similar notes as the nose. A salinity and vibrancy especially on the medium length finish· 🔔 This wine has a purity and elegance to it. The fruit has tension and texture. These wines really highlight the Freestone-Occidental area, which is being reviewed to qualify as a separate AVA of the Sonoma Coast. I have always believed that the Sonoma Coast AVA is too large and diverse to be grouped into 1 region. These wines are going to be highly allocated and if you want to get access to them then I suggest you get on the mailing list quickly.
