Ruchè is an interesting grape with an unclear origin story. Many believe that it is a native variety of the Asti Province in Piedmont, Italy. While others believe that it is a French transplant from Burgundy. There are about 40 hectares planted north of Asti centered around the town Castagnole Monferrato. Originally awarded DOC status in 1987 and elevated to DOCG in 2010· 👁 Medium+ ruby color with a pale rim· 👃 Pronounced intensity on the nose. Aromas of rose, geranium, stewed red plum, stewed black cherry, and leather· 👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, high coarse tannins, medium+ alcohol, and medium body. The palate shows more fruit but mostly cooked. Bramble, blackberry, plum, and dried cherry. Almost fruit leather. A little bit of peppery spice and anise. Then a medium+ finish that is rose water and geranium, which is interesting then a bitter note takes over· 🔔 This wine is extremely floral. Worth trying, but have had a few more interesting examples of Ruchè while in Italy. If I had to draw a comparison I would say some where between Gamay and Nebbiolo· #redwine #italianwine #ruchedicastagnolemonferrato #ruche #piedmont #italy #esoteric
