2005 Maison Michel Picard - Les Chaumees Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru (90 pts) #winereview - Medium gold color. Medium intensity on the nose. Initially a lot of oak and other secondary notes. Toast, smoke, biscuit, butter, and lemon custard. After some air the fruit starts to come out along with the underpinning of minerality. Kumquat, dried pineapple, honey, melon, white peach, and pear. There is a steeliness to it as well. The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium alcohol, and medium+ body. Initial attack has fruit. Kumquat, peach, dried pineapple, and bruised pear. Mid palate is a touch thin, then it transitions to oak and minerality. Smoke, toast, charred wood, and butter dominate, but there is a rocky component in there. Finish is long and heavily based on the oak regiment. Happy not to find premox in a 2005! It's aged well and in its drinking window now. This is well made, but I would say not as graceful nor powerful as I would have liked. The fruit hasn't stood up to oak in the wine and I think a lot of flaws are hidden. This is not old school Cali buttery Chardonnay in anyway and I will gladly be finishing this bottle. #france #burgundy #cotedebeaune #chassagnemontrachet #1ercru #premiercru #leschaumees #chardonnay #michelpicard #wineterroir #wine #winegeek #winelover #winetasting
