2016 Penley Estate - Helios Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (93 pts) @penleyestate · 🙋♂️ Have you had an Australian Cabernet Sauvignon recently❓ ℹ️ This wine is 💯 Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra, Australia. Coonawarra's Terra Rossa soil is the most famous terroir of Australia. The reddish-brown soil is either clay or loan on top of a bed of well-drained limestone. This strip of land is 1 km wide by 12 km long. Helios is the top bottling of Penley Estate. The wine was aged in French oak barrels for 16 months with 50% new. Then aged another 6 months in stainless steel· 👁 Medium+ ruby color with a pale rim· 👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of very ripe black currant, blackberry, black plum, oak, vanilla, toast, oregano, pine, tomato leaf, black olives, and earthy· 👄 The wine is dry, high acidity, medium+ ripe tannins, medium+ alcohol (14.5%) and medium+ body. A medium+ length finish of black currant, plum, and dried herbs· 🔔 This a gorgeous wine that is super concentrated, but not heavy. The acidity is very lifting and I was shocked when I saw the 14.5% alcohol on the label. It holds the alcohol so well. This has a restrained moderate body to it and the tannin management is also well done. Tons of texture and dry extract here. This is plush and ripe while still being completely balanced. Excellent effort and this will be stunning with more time in the cellar. While the label is hard to photograph, it is visually stunning.
