1970 Bodegas Riojanas - Monte Real Gran Reserva (96 pts) @bodegasriojanas · 🙋‍♂️ What was the oldest bottle of wine that you enjoyed in the last year❓· ℹ️ Bodegas Riojanas was founded in 1890. This Bodega was instrumental in helping to form the Rioja DO in 1926. They should be considered a traditional house. Historically using only American Oak, but some French Oak was added from 1990 onward. Like most traditional producers they make 2 top cuvées. Viña Albina (Bordeaux shaped bottle) is their more elegant style wine. Monte Real (Burgundy shaped bottle) is their more powerful and structured style. This is can be confusing, but is a good general rule for traditional producers. Gran Reserva should be all estate owned Tempranillo vineyards from Rioja Alta around Cenicero· 👁 Medium- garnet color with a pale rim· 👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of dried cherry, dried raspberry, dried strawberry, dried leaves, orange peel, tobacco, cedar, earthy, and dried flowers (potpourri)· 👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, low resolved fine-grained tannins, medium alcohol, and medium body. A sandy texture to the wine with extremely fine sediment in the glass. A long length finish of dried red fruit and tobacco· 🔔 This wine is showing better than the last bottle, which I scored 94 points. Similar tasting notes, but this was a bit fresher with a more prominent acidity and more dried fruit as opposed to earthier flavors. 1970 was a great vintage in Rioja and this is one of the top bottlings at that time. It was a stunning little piece of history at 49 years young! 🤩🙌
